Chakras and Their Meanings

Published by Kemos Yowe on

The human body has seven (7) major chakras. Chakra in Sanskrit means “wheels”. They are like wheels or fans that spin to circulate energy.

Defined simply, chakras are energy centers that are responsible for circulating the life-force energy around the body, from the crown chakra to the root chakras, and back up again and throughout the body.

We will look at the following:

  1. Their location in our body,
  2. Chakra color,
  3. Their meaning,
  4. Their main function or what they control, and
  5. What earth element each represents.

Our body is also covered with energy meridians or so in chi-gong called the acupuncture points. The human body is prone to become ill when the chakras are blocked or when this energy meridian are blocked because blockages stop the life-force energy from flowing freely in our body.

We will look at the symptoms of blockages, as well as the causes of blockages so you will know that some common illnesses do not require medical drugs, but clearing of the chakras.

The 7 Major Chakras and Their Meanings

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)

  • Location: At the base of the spine; the tailbone area
  • Color: Red
  • Meaning: Physical identity, stability and grounding
  • Main Function: Controls survival issues such as financial independence, money, and food
  • Element it represents: Earth

Symptoms of blockages: manifestation of physical issues such as arthritis, constipation, and bladder or colon problems. Also emotional feeling of insecurity about finances or other basic needs and well-being.

When it’s in alignment and open, we will feel grounded and secure, both physically and emotionally.

Possible Causes: As it is the base chakra, it represents our foundation. Every other negative experiences and emotional trauma you have gone through in life can cause blockages. The possible root causes are wide and similar to the root causes of other chakra blockages listed below, such as childhood abuse and trauma, or grew up in an unsteady or broken family background.

Mantra: “I am stronger now and I have a stable foundation.”

The root chakra represents our foundation. On the human body, it sits at the base of the spine and gives us the feeling of being grounded. When it is not blocked, we feel confident in our ability to withstand challenges and stand on our own two feet. When it’s blocked, we feel threatened, as if we’re standing on unstable ground.

2. Sacral Chakra (Swadhisthana)

  • Location: found at the lower abdomen about 2 inches below the navel area
  • Color: Orange
  • Meaning: Sexuality, pleasure, creativity
  • Main Function: Controls our sense of abundance, well-being, pleasure, and sexuality
  • Element it represents: Water

Symptoms of blockages: blockages show as physical problems with the associated organs such as urinary tract infections and lower back pain. Also, erectile dysfunction for man, and lack of sexual interest for women.

Sacral chakra is connected to our feelings of self-worth, and even more specifically about our self-worth in relation to pleasure, sexuality, and creativity.

Possible Causes: sexual abuse, past trauma, childhood abuse, or lack of control in one’s life and not grounded.

Mantra: “I always honor others, but not before I  honor myself.”

The sacral chakra make us aware of how we relate to our feelings and the emotions of others. It also controls our creativity and sexual energy.

Also, feeling of worthlessness and unimportant about yourself, inability to make your own decision and being under the hypnotic command of other peoples wishes unwillingly. Not having the ability to say “NO”. Feeling that other people’s opinions are much better than yours.

The lower chakras are associated with materialism whilst the upper chakras are associated with spirituality. The heart chakra is the bridge in-between.

That is why manifestation happens when the heart and the mind are in agreement. Whatever you wish for and put feeling to it, you will realize it.

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

Possible Causes of blockages: past trauma, regret, self-pity and lying. Also, dominating conversations in negative things, gossiping and speaking without thinking.

Mantra: “I always speak the truth.”

It’s obvious that the throat chakra controls our voice and communication quality. It allows us to express ourselves freely and truthfully. For a good number of people, it’s when they are in ailment that they will speak and listen with compassion and feel confident when they speak because they are being true to themselves with their words.

Possible Cause of blockages: lack of broad vision and positive feelings such as respect, appreciation, sincerity, kindness, and narrow view on the world beyond the physical.

Mantra: “I am open to exploring what is not seen.”

Third-eye chakra serves as a channel of communication with the divine. It gives the ability to connect to our intuition. It is also known as the eye of the soul because it registers information from the spiritual realm that is beyond the physical world.

The crown chakra is the highest chakra of all and sits at the top of the head. It represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually and the cosmic powers. It is considered the chakra of enlightenment and higher consciousness.

The crown chakra is connected to all other chakras. So when it’s open, it helps keep all the other chakras open and bring about bliss and enlightenment.
